Fiancé Visa Process (K1 Visa)

The fiancé visa, also known as the K1 visa, is for foreign citizens that are engaged to a US citizen. This fiancé visa process allows the fiancé to come to the United States and marry their fiancé within 90 days. However, in order to obtain the fiancé visa, the fiancé must meet the guidelines to be considered a fiancé.

What is a Fiancé(e)?

To be considered a fiancé of a US citizen, the fiancé must have been approved as fiancé through the Form I-129F. This form, also known as the “Petition for Alien Fiancé” must be filled out by the US citizen. Both parties must be free to marry and remain free to marry throughout the process to complete the fiancé visa application.

What is the Fiancé Visa Application Process?

There are two parts to the fiancé visa process, each with its own steps.

Step 1- Fill Out the Petition

  • The Citizen must fill out Form I-129F, Petition for Alien Fiancé.
  • Once the petition is approved, it will be sent to The National Visa Center where the petitioner will receive a case number. This case number will then be sent to the US Embassy or Consulate of the country the fiancé lives in.

Step 2- Apply for the Visa

  • Once the US citizen received the letter from The National Visa Center, they need to tell their fiancé where and when to go into the consulate or the US Embassy
  • It’s now time to prepare for the interview and gather all the documents needed
